PRACTICAL GUIDE · UPDATED 2026-10-31

Choosing a tradesperson when you need extra support

Questions about costs, communication and a comfortable visit — for you or someone you support.

Anyone can need extra support when a repair is stressful. You might prefer written information, more time to decide, step-free access or someone you trust present. Start with the help you want, rather than a label about your age or health. Our practical suggestions below are requests to discuss with the business; they are not promises that every listed firm provides these arrangements.

Older people, carers and anyone needing extra support may also find the Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland Business Directory useful as another place to look for local traders. Its official page, checked on 31 October 2026, offers free online searches and telephone searches on 0800 599 9435; traders charge for their work. Its stated process includes two references, insurance and qualification checks, and agreement to its Customer Charter. It also says it cannot recommend individual traders. This external resource is separate from Plumber Shortlist: linking to it does not imply Age UK endorsement of this directory or membership or approval of any business listed here.

Before booking, ask who will attend, who will invoice you and whether your address is covered. Ask for a written quote before work starts, including call-out and diagnostic charges, VAT, minimum charge and any out-of-hours rate. Ask what happens if no repair is made; agree extra work and costs in writing before they begin. For planned work, compare written quotes and ask about relevant insurance, guarantees and the complaints process. Keep the agreed scope and receipts.

For gas work, use the official Gas Safe Register to check the attending engineer and the qualifications relevant to your job. Match the person to the current photo ID card and check its work categories. A business listing, a review score or a directory shortlist does not establish the individual engineer's competence. See our Gas Safe ID guide for the detailed checks.

Ask: Can you confirm the appointment and arrival window in writing? Can you text before arrival? Can you explain the options slowly, use plain language or send a larger-print quote? Can you keep a clear route through my home and explain any interruption to heating or water? Discuss adjustments in advance. Service providers have duties to make reasonable adjustments for disabled customers; what is reasonable depends on the circumstances.

If you wish, arrange for a trusted person to join a call or be present during the visit. Tell the business what they may discuss with that person. You remain in control of decisions unless someone has lawful authority to act for you. Ask whether they can use an agreed arrival password and explain how to verify a replacement engineer. These are suggested arrangements, not a directory background check or safeguarding accreditation. You do not have to put a diagnosis, care plan, key-safe code or information about living alone in a public profile or shortlist.

Warning signs include pressure to decide immediately, unexplained price increases or refusal to identify the business or put charges in writing. You do not have to agree to work under pressure. When it is safe, take time to decide and seek a second opinion or help from someone you trust. Contact Citizens Advice for consumer guidance about a dispute. For immediate danger, follow our emergency guidance first; never delay emergency help while building a shortlist or checking quotes.
