How to compare plumbing quotes without missing the extras
Compare the same job description, understand the charging basis and keep the agreement in writing.
For planned work, give each plumber the same description and ask for a written quote. Citizens Advice recommends seeking at least three quotes where possible. Ask first whether the quote itself costs anything. Never delay emergency action to collect prices.
A quote sets an agreed price for defined work; an estimate is an approximate cost. Ask for labour, materials, VAT, exclusions and the period the quote remains valid. For a repair that needs diagnosis first, ask what the initial charge covers and when you will be asked to approve more spending.
Agree the timing, payment arrangements and how changes will be recorded. Do not assume a low headline price includes removing waste or putting disturbed finishes right: ask. Check the trader's contact details, relevant qualifications and insurance before agreeing to planned work.
Keep the quote, messages, invoice and photographs of the finished work. If a problem arises, explain it to the trader in writing and ask for a proposed remedy. Citizens Advice says work should be carried out with reasonable care and skill; the remedy depends on the circumstances. Its home improvements guidance can help you decide what to do next.
Your checklist
- Use one job description so prices are comparable.
- Confirm whether you have a quote or an estimate.
- Ask what the total includes and excludes, including VAT.
- Record agreed changes and keep the paperwork.
- Confirm the exact business, the attending engineer and who will invoice you or subcontract the work.
- Ask for the total call-out or diagnostic charge, hourly or minimum charge, VAT and after-hours rates before agreeing.
- Ask for a realistic arrival window and authorise additional work and costs before it begins.
- Check relevant gas credentials, insurance, warranty and the complaints process; ask for a written receipt.
