Emergency & 24/7 helpStart with the right kind of help.
Gas smell or CO concern →

Urgent listings are discovery leads, not confirmed attendance. Ask whether someone is available now and agree call-out, diagnosis, VAT and out-of-hours charges before booking. Advertised 24/7 cover is not a guarantee of arrival.

FIRST, GET SAFE. THEN, TAKE A BREATH.

A calm decision can make all the difference.

When something goes wrong, panic can leave us vulnerable. Once everyone is safe, taking a few minutes to check the right tradesperson and agree clear costs can help you feel in control.

Suspected gas or carbon monoxide, fire, or flooding near electrics? Act on the immediate danger first. Don’t wait to compare businesses. Get emergency guidance →

YOUR HOME. YOUR CHOICE. YOUR PACE.

Know what to ask.
Get the support you need.

Whether you are arranging a repair for yourself or helping someone else, a few clear questions can make the visit easier. Anyone can need extra support.

01 / CHECK

The right person for the job.

Who will attend? Check their identity, relevant qualifications and your address coverage. For gas work, check the attending engineer’s current registration and work categories.

02 / AGREE

Clear costs. No pressure.

Ask for charges in writing: call-out, diagnosis, VAT and out-of-hours fees. Agree what happens if no repair is made and how extra work is authorised.

03 / ASK

A visit that works for you.

Ask about written or larger-print information, a text before arrival, more time to explain and having someone you trust present. Agree access needs directly with the business.

These are questions to discuss, not a guarantee that a business offers particular support. Keep diagnoses, care plans and access codes out of public information. Immediate danger? Get emergency guidance first.

IMMEDIATE GAS / CARBON MONOXIDE DANGER

Smell gas? Suspect a gas escape?

Get to safety. Call the National Gas Emergency Service from a safe place.

0800 111 999 ↗

Free, 24 hours a day in Great Britain. Don’t use flames or operate electrical switches. Don’t go into a cellar or an unsafe area. This emergency service is separate from a routine boiler repair.

If you suspect carbon monoxide, go outside into fresh air and get medical advice. Call 999 for immediate danger or severe symptoms. For LPG, contact your LPG supplier’s emergency service; tell the emergency operator what fuel is involved.

CLEAR INFORMATION. HONEST LIMITS.

Confidence comes from checking.

Being based in Leicestershire does not automatically qualify a business for advertising. Searches include basic unclaimed profiles that have passed initial public-information checks. A basic listing is not full membership approval or the business’s endorsement. Claimed profiles and completed checks are shown separately.

Source checked, registration matched, initial screening and full profile approval are separate stages. For gas work, check the attending engineer’s current card and relevant work categories. No payment buys verification. We don’t publish invented reviews, availability or “best plumber” rankings.

BEFORE YOU CALL

A few answers.
A clearer next step.

Practical questions for choosing plumbing and heating help in Leicester and Leicestershire.

Can I arrange an urgent visit here?

Use our urgent searches to find businesses, then contact your chosen firm directly. We do not dispatch engineers or confirm appointment times. Ask who will attend, whether your address is covered and what the initial visit costs.

Explore urgent help →
Does “24/7” mean someone is available now?

A business may advertise round-the-clock cover, but that does not confirm an engineer is available for your address or fault. Ask for the expected arrival window and any out-of-hours charge. For a gas escape or suspected carbon monoxide, use the separate emergency guidance first.

Gas and carbon monoxide guidance →
Is the call-out fee the whole price?

A “no call-out charge” offer can still include a minimum labour or diagnostic charge. Ask whether diagnosis, labour, parts and VAT are included, whether there is a minimum charge and what you pay if no repair is made. Get the charging basis in writing and agree how you authorise any extra work.

Read the costs checklist →
How do I check a gas engineer?

Check the individual who attends against the official Gas Safe Register and their current photo ID card. Their qualifications must cover the fuel, appliance and work required. A trading name, logo or review score alone does not establish competence.

Check the card and work categories →
Can someone help me choose or join the visit?

Use Save + to build a shortlist and download the public business details to share yourself. You can ask a business for written information, extra explanation or for someone you trust to be present. Agree any support arrangements directly.

What does an unclaimed profile mean?

It is a public-information listing compiled from the linked business source. The business has not accepted the profile or completed our full approval process. Check its evidence status and confirm details before booking. Businesses can apply to claim and complete their profile.

Why Anthony started Plumber Shortlist

Anthony drew on his extensive experience in the appliance industry and the concerns customers shared with him about plumbing services and pricing. He has also witnessed first-hand how older customers can face poor care or excessive charges when an urgent problem leaves them anxious and under pressure. This inspired him to create a directory focused on meaningful checks, clear information and fair, transparent pricing, with particular care for vulnerable customers.
